HEOS Not Responding? Here's How to Fix It Fast

Short answer: Most HEOS and smart speakers connectivity failures come down to one of four things: Wi-Fi band conflicts, a stuck HEOS app cache, a router that dropped the device's IP lease, or a firmware mismatch between HEOS and your assistant's skill/action. Fix these in order below before assuming it's a hardware fault.

If your HEOS speaker has gone silent, won't show up in the app, or Alexa/Google says it "can't reach" your device, this is your fix list.

1. Restart in the Right Order

Don't just restart the speaker. Restart in this sequence:

1.    Power off the HEOS speaker/soundbar/receiver
2.    Restart your router
3.    Wait 60 seconds
4.    Power the HEOS device back on
5.    Reopen the HEOS app

This clears stale IP leases and forces a fresh handshake. It's the single most common fix for "device not found."

2. Check Your Wi-Fi Band

HEOS devices are picky about 2.4GHz vs 5GHz. If your router broadcasts one combined SSID for both bands, this is a frequent culprit.

1.    Split your router into separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz network names
2.    Connect the HEOS device specifically to the 2.4GHz band
3.    Reconnect your phone to the same band temporarily during setup

3. Clear the HEOS App Cache (Don't Just Reinstall)

Uninstalling and reinstalling often doesn't fully clear cached device data. Instead:

Android: Settings → Apps → HEOS → Storage → Clear Cache

iOS: Offload the app (Settings → General → iPhone Storage → HEOS → Offload App), then reinstall

This fixes the "app shows device online, but won't play" symptom.

4. Re-Link the Voice Assistant Skill/Action

If Alexa or Google Assistant can see the HEOS device in their own app but won't respond to commands, the skill link itself has likely expired. This happens silently after router changes or long periods of inactivity.

Alexa: Alexa app → More → Skills & Games → Your Skills → HEOS → Disable Skill → re-search and re-enable

Google Assistant: Google Home app → Devices → HEOS device → remove → re-link via "Works with Google" partner list

5. Check for a Firmware Mismatch

HEOS pushes firmware updates independently per device. If one speaker in a multi-room group updates and another doesn't, group commands and voice control both break silently.

1.    Open HEOS app → Settings → My Devices → check each device's firmware version individually
2.    Update any device showing "Update Available," one at a time, not as a batch

6. Isolate the Device (Not the Network)

If only one HEOS device is unresponsive while others work fine:

1.    Move it closer to the router temporarily and retest
2.    Check if it's on a mesh network extender. HEOS multicast discovery can fail across some mesh systems that isolate client bands
3.    If it reconnects near the router, the issue is signal strength or mesh isolation, not the speaker itself

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my HEOS speaker keep dropping from voice control but still plays fine from the app?

This is almost always an expired assistant skill link, not a network or hardware issue. Re-link the skill in the Alexa or Google Home app (Step 4).

Why do only some HEOS speakers respond to Alexa in a multi-room group?

A firmware mismatch between devices in the group is the most common cause. Check each device's firmware version individually. HEOS doesn't always auto-update every unit in sync.

Does a mesh Wi-Fi system cause HEOS connectivity problems?

It can. Some mesh systems isolate devices across access points in a way that blocks HEOS's device-discovery protocol. If a device only works near the main router, mesh band-steering or client isolation is the likely cause.

Should I use 2.4GHz or 5GHz for HEOS?

2.4GHz is the safer default for HEOS devices, especially in larger homes, due to better range and fewer discovery issues than 5GHz-only networks.

I've tried everything. Is this a hardware fault?

If a factory reset and a direct router connection both fail to bring the device back online, it's reasonable to suspect hardware failure. At that point, get it checked rather than continuing to troubleshoot software.

Still Not Fixed?

Some connectivity issues trace back to how a home automation system was originally networked, not the device itself, especially in larger or multi-zone homes. PRO FX installs and services HEOS and smart home automation systems across India, and our support network can diagnose network-level issues that app troubleshooting alone can't fix.
